Forwarded email goes to the Spam folder
What sends some forwarded email to Spam, and the checks that move it back to your inbox.
Updated 29 October 2026
Email sent to your alias reaches your destination inbox, but some of it lands in the Spam folder.
Why it happens#
Mailyoto refuses email that its spam check scores as spam. Your inbox provider runs its own filter on top, and forwarding makes its checks harder:
- Mailyoto sends the forward from its own servers, with an envelope address on your domain. The sender’s SPF record doesn’t cover Mailyoto’s servers. SPF can no longer confirm the sender.
- Without SPF, the sender’s DMARC check depends on the sender’s own DKIM signature. A sender without one, or with a broken one, fails DMARC at your inbox.
- Most inbox providers treat a sender whose server or domain is on a blocklist as risky.
- Words, links and attachments typical of spam raise the score at your inbox, whoever sent the message.
Mailyoto seals every forward with ARC, which tells your inbox provider what the authentication results were when the message reached Mailyoto. Some providers use that seal when they decide.
Fix it#
-
Check that your domain is verified#
Open Domains and look at your domain’s Forwarding pill. A cross means a record is missing. Open the DNS tab, fix every row that shows a cross, then choose Check DNS. DNS records not verifying covers the common causes.
-
Mark the message as not spam#
In your inbox, open the Spam folder, select the message and mark it as not spam. Your inbox provider learns from it.
-
Add a filter for the alias#
In Gmail, a filter on the alias address keeps all its email out of Spam. Create the Gmail filter. Other providers have a safe senders or allow list that does the same.
-
Ask the sender to sign their email#
When the email comes from one sender, open its full headers and look for
dkim=pass. Read message headers shows where to find them. If it saysdkim=noneordkim=fail, the sender needs to set up DKIM, and a DMARC record, with their email provider.
Confirm it worked#
Ask the sender to send another message, or send one yourself from another account. It arrives in your inbox.
Important
Never choose Report spam on an email that reached you through your alias. The report counts against Mailyoto’s servers, not the original sender. Read why.
Every forwarded email goes to spam
Check the Forwarding pill first. Then check whether the emails share one sender, or one kind of content, such as newsletters. Keep only important email stops newsletters and promotions at Mailyoto, before they reach your inbox.
Real email bounces as spam before it reaches me
The sender gets a bounce instead. Spam checks explains how Mailyoto scores email and what the sender can change.
